The West Coast Fiero “Long Tube” 304 Stainless Exhaust Headers are designed to optimize the performance of your Fiero engine by providing it with the necessary breathing space. This is achieved by reducing the back pressure in the exhaust system, allowing the engine to expel exhaust gases more efficiently.
The result of this improved efficiency is a noticeable increase in horsepower. Depending on the size of your engine, you can expect to see an increase of between 5% to 10%. In practical terms, this translates to an increase of 7 to 15 horsepower or more when tested on a dynamometer, also known as a “dyno”. This boost in power can help your vehicle accelerate from zero to three-digit speeds more quickly.
These headers are particularly effective in increasing torque and power in the 1500 to 5500 rpm range. This is the range where most street-driven vehicles spend the majority of their time, so you’ll likely notice a significant improvement in everyday driving conditions.
The headers themselves are constructed from 1-1/2″ 16-gauge steel tubing for the head pipes, with 3/8″ flanges. The “Y” pipes, which connect the headers to the rest of the exhaust system, are made from 2″ 16-gauge tubing. They connect to the collectors with a 3-bolt exhaust flange and to the 2″ exhaust system with a stock 2 bolt flange and cone seal.
The headers come with a “Y” pipe included, and you have the option of choosing between 1018 steel or 304 stainless steel for this component. To ensure a complete installation, header bolts are also included in the package.
However, it’s important to note that the installation of these headers should be done with care. The weight of the exhaust system should be minimized on the header system to prevent excessive strain and potential cracking of the headers. This can occur if there is excessive movement of the engine due to bad mounts, or if high output engines are used with stock Fiero mounts. Therefore, proper suspension of the exhaust system, ensuring minimal stress is placed on the headers, is of utmost importance. This will help to prolong the life of the headers and maintain optimal performance.
